The glen at Walmer was to be opened to the public for the first time in a hundred years.

We were commissioned to design and make a collection of sky seats, to enable visitors to recline and enjoy views of the sky and tree companies. We took inspiration from beach and elm leaves and folded origami to construct large, crinkled leaf forms from green oak. The seats allow multiple ways of sitting and reclining and each can seat 2 to 3 people. The ridged surfaces cast ever-changing shadows throughout the day.

During the enabling works a huge beech tree was felled by high winds.  The glen was difficult to access, and we were commissioned to find a solution to the felled tree. In the first phase we chopped the tree into large but more manageable sections and manoeuvred into a star shape. After time it became apparent that children were playing on the huge logs and a ‘quieter’ solution was required. We returned and carved the blocks into a range of abstract natural forms, which we then spaced around the glen. We also carved some simple abstract benches to offer quiet spaces to sit.
