The brief was to take a battered 1970’s Ford transit and convert it into a family campervan. The transit was in very bad condition needing full restoration in order to hit the road again. We enlisted the help of Stu-Art to refurbish the van.
Another challenge was maximising space in the van. Here we collaborated with Tenfold, using their mechanical folding system to dramatically triple the floorspace.
The internal design allowed for the interior of the van to function in both closed and open mode. We went for a Memphis design style, using Perspex tiles and pegboard systems to add geometry colour and fun.
The engineering of the mechanisms was complex and tolerances very tight. The steel folding system and frames had to be as lean as possible, and we used strong, light weight torsion boxes for the roof and walls. The cladding was aluminium.
The interior was filled with bespoke, multifunctional furniture, the usual Amazing Spaces tricks and surprises, and expert styling by Jane Field Lewis. The project was revealed on Hastings’ pier.
