Arne invited us to design and make furniture for a 17th century farmhouse garden in Devon. We produced an irrigated potting bench, large oak cupboard, lead lined planter and sink for the greenhouse. The dramatic cannon turned legs and pegged rails of the potting table were inspired by Lutyen’s kitchen furniture at Castle Drogo. The lead sink was large enough to submerge an entire watering can.
The project was for us a great return to traditional joinery and furniture making, as well as exploring combinations of lead and oak.
The 9-meter-long corner bench was inspired by Arne’s love of traditional settles. We combined a high fielded back with bolection mouldings, turned legs and traditional arms. It was a huge piece of furniture made from several oak boules.
