On the site of a rather tired garden shed, the client wanted to build a solid, properly constructed building with plenty of light, which would take full advantage of the location.
The multi-functional structure provides the perfect space for perusing the family’s artistic pursuits, as well as providing guest accommodation.
There are two internal sections: the workroom that contains the pottery, workbench and woodworking areas and the main living room. Usually, both are treated as one large open space. If a more cosy, intimate guest room is required, the large top hung sliding door barn door can close off the utility space.
The inspiration for the build came from an eclectic assortment of buildings, ranging from Scandinavian wooden summerhouses to prefabricated steel Nissen huts to garden potting sheds and potter’s studios.
The interior needed to be clean and orderly with all its elements crafted and refined - each item of furniture was specifically for this building.
The design aesthetic of creating a calm space with a natural look led to the decision of only using wood. We used ash, larch, oak and elm, allowing the natural charm and beauty of the timber to take centre stage.
