Perhaps our most whimsical project, the brief was to create a beach hut that could go anywhere, both on land and sea. The beach hut obviously provided a playful and cheerful theme that exemplifies British eccentricity. Although we wrestled with a rationale for the project, we eventually settled on it being the ultimate picnic vehicle.

The real challenge was to get the hut to float and motor safely on the water within a tight budget. Under the supervision of a boat builder, we designed a recycled oil drum raft with a sunken hull. This gave more room in the cabin and allowed for a mezzanine bed, as well as various multifunctional features. The entire crew breathed a huge sigh of relief when she was launched, and the hut handled well. The hall was a combination of old oil drums with a lightweight steel frame and aluminium sunken hull. The cabin was constructed from a reclaimed beach hut, pine and ply.
