As part of the Dover Castle Northern Defences offer, a new regulation compliant staircase was required to connect the keep with the outer bailey. The location was sensitive both visually and in terms of historic fabric and archaeology. Working closely with Historic England engineers, English Heritage curators, the conservation architects Avanti and Paye, we designed and built a green oak staircase.

The challenges were conforming with regulations whist having to work within the constraints of the historic fabric. The staircase connects medieval and Georgian parts of the castle. It had to be in keeping with both periods, yet a clear new addition to the castle not specifically referencing either period.
