Studio Hardie were commissioned to design and build a play area at Bolsover castle. The castle offered a rich source of content and inspiration, in particular the epic doorways and castle details, as well as the strong equestrian history.       

Given the designated site in a corner of the grounds, we designed an L shaped battlement structure. This comprised of parallel wall sections with multiple entrances, exits and levels, ramps, walkways, platforms, tunnels, ladders and a slide. This construction allowed for a cost effective and efficient use of timber and maximised play value. We then set out a formal arrangement of swings, toddler towers and ‘performing’ horses all echoing architectural features of the castle.

The play area is a popular part of the visitor offer at Bolsover, and the large door arch swings remain one of our favourite designs.
