We were asked by the head of design at Bedales school to design three multifunctional tables to sit in the main entrance in the new art and design building.  The tables needed to be a feature in the space and would be used for working groups, discussions and displaying work.

Bedales connection with art, design and craft is a fundamental part the school’s history and ethos and we wanted to celebrate this. After exploring a range of concepts and playing with twisting geometrical forms, we created a tapered and twisted triangular reciprocal form for the legs, with a dodecagon top, exploring the geometry hidden in the shape.

The construction was very complex with multiple compound angles and complex geometry. We constructed the tables from Larch tri-ply with tubular patinated steel on each leading edge. The geometrical pattern of the tops was inlayed with patinated steel.

The finished tables were a subtle play on the school motto “Work of Each for Weal of All” as each component supported the next, creating strength and stability.
