We were commissioned to design and build a staircase leading up to the dormitory range at Battle Abbey, enabling visitor to access the range for the first time. The staircase had to sensitively sit alongside the scheduled monument and be supported via steel flitch plates to the ground. The result was a timber frame staircase with arched braces and bespoke fitches to mitigate digging at an archeologically sensitive site. The resulting staircase blends unobtrusively into the site. We also designed and built self-supporting timber balustrades along the buildings gable end and window apertures.
