In addition to the play at Battle Abbey, we were commissioned to reanimate the famous location of the 1066 Battle of Hastings with carved figures to offer interpretation and excitement, but also an incentive to draw visitors around the landscape. We worked closely with historians and curators to ensure the figures appearance was historically accurate and they were located sensitively around the battlefield. The tone was also important as although somewhat playful, the subject matter was sombre. Once designed, the figures were carved from single pieces of oak by Simon O’Rourke, David Lucas and Daniel Cordell, three of the most respected chainsaw carvers in the country. They have become very much a part of the landscape, drawing visitors around the site, as well as offering intrigue, discovery and photo opportunities.
